Featured Artist - Byron Brown - The Phukheadz

Today I wanted to take the time to talk about something a little bit different. I myself am a huge fan of art in all forms. Ever since I was a kid I have loved cartoons and drawing and I had a strong passion for Comic Books as well and the awesome artwork they contain. Granted there are many genres of music that I am found of and cars are another form of art that I have always been in love with. Of course there is always film and one of my favorite styles of film just happens to be Claymation. So, when I myself was inducted into the L.O.O.P., I could not have been happier. I was familiar with Byron and what he was doing with the Phukheadz and I was definitely looking forward to hopefully one day getting one myself. I did not have to wait terribly long as I was fortunate enough to meet up with Byron in Miami this past spring and I was presented with Phukhead #0734. Each Phukhead is hand made by Byron and they come in a custom handmade and numbered box as well as a numbered Certificate of Authenticity. Byron has given Phukheadz to over 800 people and counting and some of the different ones he has done are just Phuking fantastic! I proudly display mine at home in the Shoe Skool Studios and it's something I will definitely keep for life. Byron Brown is one hardworking S.O.B. who is an awesome contributor to the Florida dance music scene and beyond. He puts together some of the best events in the Jacksonville area and people with a positive attitude like Byron are hard to come by. Quickly making friends wherever he goes, spreading the word of the Phukheadz far and wide and you can be sure you will see him at an event in the future with his hand-made collectibles. Check out his biography below and head on over to some of the Phukheadz’ pages to learn more about them.

The Phukheadz Induct Cypress Hill Into The L.O.O.P.
My name is Byron Brown. I am an artist based out of Jacksonville, FL who sculpts clay figures called Phukheadz that I present to different artists, comedians, musicians, dancers, fans and promoters as a way of saying thank you for all they do in entertaining me throughout my years. I run a photo journal on Facebook and MySpace of over 800 people who have received their very own Phukhead. Recipients have included Public Enemy, Cheech and Chong, Willie Nelson, Elvis Costello, Juliette Lewis, Queensryche, Skinny Puppy, KRS One, DJ Qbert, Nitzer Ebb, Martin Atkins, Harry Shearer, Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, Steven Wright, John Leguizamo, Eddie Griffin, AIR, members of Wu-Tang Clan, Emilie Autumn, Steve Porter, Rabbit In The Moon, Combichrist, The Crystal Method, Plump DJs, Goldie, Wes Borland and the list goes on and on. The complete list can be found at MySpace and Facebook. There is also an online blog that features interviews with fellow L.O.O.P members. In a recent mission to add to the Loyal Order of Phukheadz, I came across another mission by Velvet Hammer (management for Cypress Hill). I joined their street team and handed flyers out to every corner of Jacksonville, from the night clubs, the beach spots, head shops, tattoo parlors, ticket outlets and over 900 invites on their event page on Facebook. For this, I earned two backstage passes for their Orlando stop on August 20, 2010 and the chance to do some Phukheadz biz. The spirits were high when I walked in the venue and even the staff and security was chiller than normal, probably due to all the smoke in the air. We went backstage and entered the stage door to watch Collie Buddz join Slightly Stoopid on stage. Then we went out into the loading dock and walked around the buses when I spotted the first inductee and newest member of Cypress Hill, DJ Julio G. I introduced myself and then presented him with West Coast Phuk, showed him the Phukheadz for the rest of the group and then he hollered at B-Real and Eric Bobo to come over.

B-real was inducted next with Dr. Greenphuk and Eric Bobo with Conga Phuk. When the guys saw Sen’s Phukhead, they all became super excited over the king-size blunt and old school Cypress hat he was reppin. B-Real asked me to give all my contact information to their tour manager and then pointed me in the direction of Sen Dog. We got the cameras rolling and documented the fourth and final presentation in which Sen showed so much excitement when he opened the box and saw Sen Phuk aka Blunted Phuk. We then followed Cypress Hill as they joined Slightly Stoopid for the encore and rocked the sold out crowd. Over all, out of the 800 plus Phukheadz presented, this was probably one of the best experiences I’ve had. Thanks to Cypress Hill for all the love and being really cool down to earth peeps. Thanks to Neal of Velvet Hammer and the security of Hard Rock for being there every step of the way and helping me get through a couple of road blocks. Thanks to Dan and Ann for helping me with the camera and all the foot work. Look forward to working with Velvet Hammer again, hopefully to induct Alice In Chains, System Of A Down and the VH crew.

Free Tune + Free Mix - Atomic Hooligan

I hope everyone is having a good weekend so far and enjoying the holidays. The lady and I are looking forward to trimming our tree tonight and we picked it up last night at the same place my family has been going to for over 20 years! Today is like an early mini Christmas with a sleigh full of stuff in the bag via that festive duo from Watford, Atomic Hooligan. With two acclaimed albums on Botchit & Scarper under their belts, Atomic Hooligan are well established as dance music trend setters and innovators of bass. Atomic Hooligan have graced the front covers of DJ and IDJ magazines, performed LIVE @ Fabric with their 9 piece band and officially remixed Underworld. Not to mention that Terry's energetic Dj sets, truly prove that Bass music is a winning formula! Returning to Functional with "Is It Real", a cheeky and infectious chunked up odyssey complete with one of the gnarliest bass lines you'll hear this side of the pond. Proper groove breaks and Parliament styled vocals are 100% guaranteed to inject peak time funk into dancefloors far and wide! If you don't believe it, you can "get the funk out my face".
Funkatech's finest purveyors of smashing up the dancefloor at any cost, the ones like Pyramid take the remix bull by the horns and deliver one almighty stadium sized bass whumping re-lick (Featured in the FREE mix below). With a climactic intro guaranteed to get the crowd into a frenzy, they soon drop into half speed Dubstep, a pneumatic synth lead and menacing subs. But whoa there! Watch the drop! The sparse beats, soon make way for a climactic build into tear out bad boy D'N' B styled breaks taking absolutely no prisoners. You have been warned!
KouncilHouse (Nominated best breakthrough producer at the International Breakbeat Awards / Best Producer @ 2010 Nu Rave awards) has produced with Micky Finn, D'Cruze (Suburban Bass), Leeroy Thornhill, (Ex Prodigy) and Brian Douglas (Future Sound of London) and has remixed for the likes of The Freestylers & Pendulum, Smart Systems, Stakker Humanoid, Atomic Hooligan and the Dub Pistols. KouncilHouse brings forth a romping and stomping 4/4 behemoth bass line funking monster to complete the package.

Atomic Hooligan 'Is It Real' [FB062] by Functional Records

Starting off the freebies we have Atomic Hooligan's "Scramble the Egg" (Also featured in the FREE mix below). Putting a Dubstep twist on the classic track, AH give a fresh and tough feel to a well known tune. Dirty bass fills out the main bits while the first breakdown reminds you where you are with parts of the original synth line coming through. The main break hits you with the guitars first quickly slamming back in business stylee with the ridiculous bass.

Atomic Hooligan - Scramble the Egg by bassmusic

Next up we have got the new Autumn mix from the AH boys which is packed full of unreleased material from the mighty "Bass=Win". Rounding it out is the Pyramid remix of "Is It Real". Just thirty-six minutes long, Atomic Hooligan pound through eleven tunes in that short period of time keeping your ears and your mind working.

New Release - KIR244 - Just For Fun - Onzeground - Memory Machine + Direct Input Remixes & 2 Free Tunes - Altered Beats Vs Blorgio - No Love

Happy Thanksgiving everybody! I know it really only applies if you are here in the States but I am and I will certainly be feasting later on today!! Kick It is back with another big release and this one is coming out you from label new comers Just For Fun. Stepping on the scene from the land of France, Just For Fun are turning out some heavyweight crossover tunas and today we have one of their freebies available below.  Putting a nasty reworking on Difuzion Crew's "Where's Dario", it's fun, cheeky and monstrous all at the same time. Stomping beats, zappy bass and rock synths battle it out with the original vocals. Heaps of edits fuel the fire on this floor-burner! Blasting bass through your speakers with their first effort on Kick It, Just For Fun are obviously in it to win it. "Onzegrounde" is a peak time workout, wasting no time getting down to business. Super catchy chords and a rough and tough bassline get things moving quickly. Excellent edits on the drums three minutes in provide a big moment before the main drop. A massive build with a quick stop brings it all back around and we're off and running again. Memory Machine is first up with his Teched out and driving remix that is a little more laid back but still plenty big enough. Mad synths and a raunchy bassline provide plenty of spark to keep the people moving. Rounding things out is the Direct Input Remix which focuses more on the melodic side of things bringing in a killer Breakbeat and a touch of the 80's in a way I am totally digging. If Tear Outs are more your thing, this is going to be the one for you with an Autobots-esque bassline and plenty of vocoder to keep it funky. Don't miss out on another big release from Kick It Recordings, available today wherever you pick up your digital music!

Free Tune - Buraka Som Sistema - Restless - Karetus Remix

We've got a big banger up for grabs today coming at you from Karetus. Putting their own take on Buraka Som Sistema's "Restless", the boys from Portugal turn out a real proper tuna. Buraka Som Sistema was founded in 2006 and is an EDM project also stemming from Portugal. Specializing in the fusion of Techno beats with the African Kuduro genre, they are generally accredited with creating the "Progressive Kuduro" genre. Buraka Som Sistema have also won a MTV European Music Award for "Best Portuguese Act" and played all over Europe including at the world famous Glastonbury Festival and the Roskilde Festival. Not much is known about the elusive Karetus other than where they are from and that they are putting together some rocking tunes. Originally a fairly laid back and Techno-esque track, Karetus really give it a proper work out starting off with a tribal feeling lead in and then breaking on the soulful vocals from the original. Big beats and buzzed out guitar drop straight in and its business time just like that. Driving bass and plenty of edits bring this remix close to Tear Out territory with a healthy dose of acid coming through after the second quick break. Killer synths provide a nice change-up just before the main breakdown. Check out some more stuff from these guys on their MySpace and Soundcloud pages.

Exclusive Interview - Karton

That's right everyone, today for your intellectual and reading enjoyment, we have an Exclusive interview from the ones like Karton! Australian natives Karton are turning heads and ears far and wide with their cutting edge sound and exceptional musicality. Taking EDM beyond kick drum heavy tunas aimed at the dancefloor they recently released their first full length album. "For All Seasons" is receiving much acclaim for it's melodic rhythms and varied style. Featuring vocals from striking artists like Sharrad, Nick Craven, Jeff Hann and Cris Clucas. One after the other anthems like "We Bleed" are executed to perfection allowing the lyrics to lead when appropriate and for the synths to take control in response. "Play Our Game" switches things up and takes us to the tougher more Tear Out side of things without overdoing it while others like "Breathe for Me" touch on the Trancier side of things. A complete package all around, "For All Seasons" is available now on Beatport and your favorite digital retailer. We were lucky enough to catch up with Karton and they were kind enough to answer the Kick It Twelve for us.

The Kick It Twelve - Karton Edition

1. – At what age did you first find yourself gravitating towards electronic music and who were some of the artists outside of Electronic music that influenced that?
I came to it pretty late, I think I was about 18, before that I was pretty much exclusively listening to Hip Hop, then a friend turned me onto Vegas by The Crystal Method which really opened my eyes up to electronic music. Listening to a lot of hip hop growing up showed me that you don’t need a big studio and a band to make music. I remember reading an interview with RZA about how he produces and that really put the idea in my head that it was something I could do myself.

2. – What was your very first Album? How about CD?
Hmm, I can even remember. I’m sure it was something pretty horrible.

3. – How did you first get involved with the Electronic music culture and what was the first event that you attended?
The first thing I went to was a warehouse party in Sydney in about 98, it was in a really run down old warehouse and all the DJ’s were playing happy hardcore. That kind of showed me early on the side of the scene that I wasn’t interested in.

4. – Where was your favorite gig that you have had to date?
Hmm, that’s tough. We played in Perth on NYD a few years ago, that was a lot of fun.

5. - Who have you been most proud to play alongside?
Playing before London Electricity in Sydney was pretty special. He runs Hospital Records which in terms of consistency has to be my favorite label of all time.

6. - Where would you most like to play that you have not yet?
Getting to play in the US would be awesome. Also playing at Fabric in London is something we have always wanted to do.

7. - What is your favorite tune you have released?
Hmm, from the album, it would have to be ‘And Then There Were Two’. My favorite remix of ours would have to be the remix we did of Andrey Mute – Landmine on XSSR Music or our remix of Liz Melody – Skeptical on Sound of Habib.

8. - Who is your favorite EDM artist? How about outside of EDM?
If it could only be one it would probably be Hybrid, outside of EDM it would have to be Crowded House.

9. - Who are some artists you would like to collaborate with in the future?
There are a lot of Australian hip hop artists that I’d like to work with and we are lucky to have lined some of them up for the second album. Also working with a band like Delphic or The Wombats would be something that I think would be interesting.

10. - What is your preferred software for producing? Hardware?
All software these days, it’s just easier to do everything inside the box, it gives you the greatest amount of control and is easy to get down lots of ideas quickly.

11. - What life lessons has the music industry taught you?
I suppose it’s not to take anything too personally, which can be hard sometimes given the time and effort that gets put into creating tunes in the studio. The other thing which ties into this is that it never hurts to take advice from those who have been around and have learnt the lessons.

12. – What does the future hold for Karton?
At the moment we are working hard on the second album, hopefully if all goes well it will be out middle of 2010.

Free Tune - Pendulum Ft. The Freestylers - Fasten Your Seatbelt - WesBeanz' Buckle Up Remix

Today we've got a Mid-tempo rework coming at you from one of our consistent contributors, Wes Beanz. Slowing things down but still injecting plenty of energy, he turns out a nasty rendition of the Pendulum Ft. The Freestylers massive classic "Fasten Your Seatbelt". Although it's down around 110 BPM's Wes' version is still sure to get everybody moving and some hands in the air. Busta Rhymes vocal bits are dropped over loads of new pieces and riffs making this almost more of a complete remix than just an edit or reworking. Keeping the bass grimey but with a new feel it pairs well with the synths and guitars and the edit heavy drum section about two minutes in. Big electric riffs and vox stabs pump up the main build up and the party favorite "it goes a little something like this" brings it all back in. Really proper stuff from the Canadian native. Check out more stuff from Wes Beanz on his Soundcloud page and if for some crazy reason you don't have the original, the link is below along with a vid.

Free Mix and Videos - BSD - Malditos Bass-Star-Dos

Wow, when you talk about a total takeover on the Beatport Breakbeat charts, BSD have certainly done that. Currently they hold numbers 3,4,5,6,7,09,10,13 and 15 through 23. Holy shit is that some serious business or what! Not to mention  their recent release with kickass counterparts Access Denied "Ultimate", held the number one spot for three weeks or so. A decade of hard work has brought the masked duo behind BSD to the forefront of the Breakbeat scene and beyond. The enigmatic caped crusaders won "Best Breakthrough Producer" at last year's Breakspoll Awards and they are just getting started. In just a short period of time they have established themselves as key players and their debut album is already propelling them to bigger and better things! With support from artists like Mr. No Hands, Laurent Garnier and Meat Katie just to name a few, these guys are pretty much going to be an unstoppable force to be reckoned with in the future. Formed in 1998 by two French lovers of electronic music, alternative trends and Indie music. Without resources and virtually no experience producing dance music, the duo had to wait almost ten years after originally conceiving BSD for things to finally take off. During those ten years BSD were flirting with Hip-Hop, Funk, New Wave, Nu Disco, Electro, Breaks and much more. From the outset BSD were clear on what they wanted to achieve - Giving the public what they want while incorporating their musical influences, staying true to themselves and by not trying to mimic or copy other artists. Following this creed, the duo have created a unique style and sound unlike anything else coming out in the land of Breaks. In celebration of the EP release, BSD have provided us with a new mix replete with mighty monsters to titillate your speakers and your ears.
"Malditos Bass-Star-Dos! is the work of several months in which we have tried to capture our open minds and our obsession with music. We have created 10 new tracks, which will be accompanied by another 8 tunes published under iBreaks Records label, forming a compilation mainly of Breakbeat but will incorporate other musical genres. In this album you will find tracks clearly influenced by early Electro ("EBM", "Elektro-Life");Tech-Funk ("Joe Jacks”, "Overestimate", "Hard 'n' Bass", etc.); Oldskool ("Total Cucumber) as well as tracks inspired by Bassline and Nu Skool Breaks ("Everybody Scream", "This Is It!", "You Must Find Strength"). In addition, we wanted to honor one of our sources of inspiration, "Party Groove", a production subtitled "Breaks Phenomenon" honoring the Nu Skool Breaks classic "TSUNAMI ONE & BT : Hip Hop Phenomenon [Marine Parade] 1999."You will also find on "Malditos Bass-Star-Dos!" some of BSD’s recent hits such as "Hypnotizin", "You Must Find Strength", "Compute", "Get Hype On This" and "Funkdation".

Free Tunes - 4 Vini - Forever Young Mixes

Holy crap it's been almost a week since I've been able to get to the blog! No matter how hard I try sometimes you just can't get to everything. Getting things back to business in the proper way we have got five stellar free tunes up for grabs today! It's been 10 years since the groundbreaking "4 Vini" LP was released to commemorate the passing of Vini Medley (10 years ago yesterday, Nov 16th 2000), founding partner of Botchit & Scarper and one of the UK underground's true musical mavericks. Ten years later and in memory of Vini and all that he achieved, Botchit & Scarper are very proud to give to you the "Forever Young: 10 Years" EP. Originally released across two LP's on Botchit and Emotif, this EP brings together all 5 of the stunning remixes for the first time. This special free EP includes remixes of Elisabeth Troy's touching tribute to Vini "Forever Young" by such esteemed artists as MJ Cole, Atomic Hooligan Ft. Uk Apachi, Freq Nasty & BLIM, Ill Logic and Raf & Ray Keith. They hope that you enjoy these tracks as much as they still do and spare a thought for the passing of somebody very special. Starting things off is the MJ Cole Mix with it's soothing violins, grooving funky bassline and the soothing vocals of Elisabeth Troy it is a stunning and beautiful piece. Next up is the B.L.I.M. & Freq Nasty rendition. Toughening up the bass and turning up the energy this one is progressive groover steadily building along until the breakdown about three and a half in. After an extended build the low frequencies carry the groove the rest of the way. Third in line is the remix from the mighty Atomic Hooligan with a chilled out down-tempo and peaceful composition. Incorporating flared scratches and Reggae vocals it brings a bit of a different vibe to the table with some hip hop flavor reminding you to "never take life for granted!" Then we have Ill Logic & Raf bringing us the Drum & Bass business end of things. Steel drums and islandy leads lend a Caribbean feel that fit the vocals well. Rounding things out is Ray Keith with a Jungle rendition that takes things in another direction with tough drums and Amen breaks. Head on over to the Botchit & Scarper site and pick them up for yourself!

Free Tune and Mix - Stylus Rex + Forthcoming Release - Volta

We've got some tasty treats on the table for everyone today! A free tune and a free mix that are both banging, what more could you ask for on a fine Thursday in November? Bringing you the Electro-Punk-Breakbeat business is none other than the lad from London known as Stylus Rex. Since the first self-pressed vinyl "Boomstick" was released in 2005, the Stylus Rex sound has come a long way. With a plethora of releases on labels like Punk Funk, Re:Connect, Control Breaks and more and five singles on Ground Level Records alone, Styles Rex is consistently pushing forward the underground bass and beats sound. Coinciding with his newest release "Volta", Stylus Rex has slipped us a spiffy "Taster Edit" for you to grab and also a pulse pounding "Touch Me I'm Sick" Dj mix to go with it. The Tech-Funk/Electro Breaks sound of "Volta" is a fresh electrified throb that is sure to amp up the party. Grooving bass gets things moving right from the get-go. Fans of the Hedflux sound will definitely want to check out this one. Steadily building straight through to three and a half minutes in with some crowd noise sprinkled over the top, the buildup is quite large and it comes back in smooth as butter after the breakdown with a real clean and techy feel. First up on remix responsibilities are Kiwa bringing us their signature sound from Finland. Hard driving beats and mean sub freqs push things along with the energetic synths and tops taking this one to peak time territory. Top stuff as usual from them. Jay Stewart is all over the other remix taking things back to the roots of Breaks. Techy and slick Jay works the groove with solid drums and a super funky feel. More cowbell, yes please. A quick mix in let's you give the track plenty of time to do it's thang and that it will as Jay extends the breakdown into a 3am hands in the air moment. Generous as Stylus Rex is, there is also the rolling "Taster Edit" for you to download available below. Plus, if you're in the mood for a healthy helping of tunas, check out the "Touch Me I'm Sick" mix also available below, which is stuffed like a Turkey by chefs like Noisia, Elite Force and Zodiac Cartel to name a few. New Release - KIR243 - Lupo - Say What - Original and Farace Remix

Yes that's right everyone, Kick It is back with another big release. We are really turning up the heat to close out 2010 and cranking out the tunas. Our newest release is just out today! Long time favorite of Kick It Recordings is Spanish native Lupo, as he's always delivering the Electro House business and this time he turns in another slick production. "Say What" is a big bassline tuna that will work a treat on many dance floors. Combining big beats, fat bass and a catchy vocal sample, while the synths and melodies are soothing and pleasant making for a danceable but groovy piece. Never one to disappoint, Farace turns out a corker Breaks remix that retains the original vibe but adds a large heaping of Breakbeat flavor for all our non 4/4 fans. Plenty of edits and zappiness all around keep things lively and the signature Farace snares pack a meaty punch! Head on over to your favorite digital site and pick it up for yourself!

Free Tune - EXCLUSIVE - TWR72 - Schizophrenia - Farace Refix

It's Farace Friday again and we have got an awesome Exclusive for you today. The F man is back with another big bad banger that's gonna rock your socks. Coming from the Netherlands, TWR72 have been working together since 2004. Dubbed by Radio 1 as "Future Techno", these guys mean business when it comes to making beats. Signed to Instant Replay in 2010 they released two EPs with support from major players like Brodinski, Laidback Luke, Tommie Sunshine and more. With a third EP set to drop in early 2011, TWR72 are just getting fired up and with works like "Schizophrenia" or "Tunnel" with its dark and warping bass and driving kicks. With a new exclusive visual show incorporated into their live acts, these guys are ready for global domination of the Techno Kind! Farace takes on "Schizophrenia" and chunks it up even more spicing up the drums and bringing the energy through the roof. Slick edits and ravey synths make for one serious track that will smash the dancefloor! Farace is on fire as of late with both mixes of his latest release "Move On" charting on Beatport in Breaks and Dubstep. Not to mention remixes on the way like Discosynthetique's "Force of Habbit" the Farace Remix and loads more up his sleeve, 2011 is looking like it's going to be a big year for Farace and Kick It Recordings so head on over to his Soundcloud page and see what the buzz is about!!

Free Tune and Free Mix - Karton - Call to Arms

When you see free stuff from Karton you know that it's going to be good. Last time we had a free track from Karton we also featured the video for "All You Need" which is not only an awesome song but the video is pretty kickass as well and it was also DJ Mag's "Single of the Month". Just in case you missed it last time, I have posted the video again today. In preparation for their massive forthcoming album, "For All Seasons", Karton are giving away another free tune and have also provided us with a quality mix for all our listening pleasure. Two years in the making, "For All Seasons" showcases what has only been hinted at in previous Karton releases. Meticulously crafted and assembled, the album allows the duo to further develop and push the boundaries of the Karton sound and the vocal talents of Sharrad, Nick Craven, Jeff Hann and Cris Clucas. Karton have expanded their sonic palate to deliver an album that is as wide in scope as it is ambitious in title. Every track is masterfully crafted and soothing to the ears. With crisp and clean beats and stellar synth work combined with top-notch vocal talent, Karton are putting out some of the freshest stuff out there. Combining Breakbeat, D&B, Electro and Electronica, Karton are taking the best of all worlds and making their own of it. Today's free tuna is no exception. "Call to Arms" starts off with beautiful keys mixed with some crunchy old school style drums. Perfected rhythms and bass blend with liquid funk and the soothing vocals of Cris Clucas. Tracks like this should be played on all types of radio stations, not just EDM as Karton are seriously breaking musical boundaries. We've also got a massive mix from them for you to peep as well. Jam packed with big business and a healthy dose of their own works, you will not be disappointed by this one. Head on over to Beatport or wherever you purchase your music and pick up their full album!
